VW’s Müller Calls Out Tesla at Conference

Speaking at a conference in Germany yesterday, VW’s CEO was surprisingly frank when it came to smaller EV companies, Tesla in particular.

Matthias Müller was speaking at “Menschen in Europe,” an event that calls itself a “forum for international understanding.” The event has talks on topics ranging from business to politics to arts and culture. Müller was invited to speak about the car industry.

The moderator asked about Tesla, and Müller had something to say:

“Now I really need to say a few words about Tesla: With all due respect, there are some world champions of big announcements in this world – I don’t want to name names. There are companies that barely sell 80,000 cars a year. Then there are companies like Volkswagen that sell 11 million cars this year, and produce a profit of 13 or 14 billion euro. If I am correctly informed, Tesla each quarter destroys millions of dollars in the three digits, and it willy-nilly fires its workers. Social responsibility? Please. We should not get carried away and compare apples with oranges,” he said, as translated by Daily Kanban.

Müller’s attack at Tesla isn’t the first by a major automaker. General Motors’ head of autonomous cars Scott Miller called Telsa CEO Elon Musk “full of crap” about how autonomous-ready Tesla’s cars really are.
